Apple’s rumored augmented reality/virtual reality headset, hasn’t even been announced yet, but Mytaverse CEO and co-founder Kenneth Landau has declared Apple the winner of the hardware headset battle.

(Mytavese is a cloud-based metaverse platform that creates 3D immersive multiplayer true-to-life work environments.)

With the tech giant’s Worldwide Developer Conference less than a month away, Apple is expected to finally reveal its first mixed-reality headset which will likely be called the “Reality Pro.” Plenty of Reality Pro rumors have already leaked over the past few months, and the Wall Street Journal offered its own overview, confirming details about the next big thing from Apple.

The headset “resembles a pair of ski goggles,” and will “fully enclose the user’s eyes” for greater immersion. In addition, the external cameras will allow for a full view of the outside world, both for practical reasons and to enable augmented reality functionally where digital projections appear in the real world.

“Apple is the greatest product tech design company in the world. So if I were to bet on a company designing the best VR / Mixed reality headset in the world, it is Apple,” says Landau. “Now, let’s not get confused between AR/VR mixed reality. AR/VR are not synonymous with the the metaverse. They are very different ways to experience the world, to see products, and to meet people.”

He adds: ”The metaverse is not just one company nor one device. It is an ecosystem experienced through a multitude of different platforms and hardware that work together to allow us, the humans behind it, to have our own persona, our own selves, and interact with others in a seamless way. Now back to the core of the question: who wins the hardware headset battle?

“Considering the greatest tech design company on the planet is Apple, I would put pretty good odds on Apple winning the headset race. Just look at what they have done with watches. The Apple Watch, a product that gets little attention and is often marred in the tech press, today sells more than the entire production of every watch company in Switzerland combined. When Apple decides to enter a market, odds are it will be disruptive, ground breaking, and lead to them commanding market share.”

About the RealityPro

When it comes to the RealityPro, the rumors are abundant. Such a device will arrive this year. Or 2024. Or 2025, Or 2026. It will be a head-mounted display. Or may have a design like “normal” glasses. Or it may be eventually be available in both.

The Reality Pro may or may not have to be tethered to an iPhone to work. Other rumors say that it could have a custom-build Apple chip and a dedicated operating system dubbed “rOS” for “reality operating system.” Or perhaps “xrOS” for extended reality operating system.

Apple’s 2023 WWDC will be held in an online format from June 5-9 with an opportunity for developers and students to celebrate in person at a special experience at Apple Park on opening day.
