As previously reported, Apple’s iPhone Duo is facing quality concerns following reports of display damage near the hinge. According to ZDNet, citing MacRumors, persistent hinge problems during development prompted changes to its primary and secondary suppliers. Industry sources suggest Apple may need to redesign the hinge to address the defects, according to Trendforce.
The reported display damage appears concentrated near the hinge. Reuters adds that iFixit identified a possible cause through a 3D hinge simulation based on teardown footage, patents, and CT scans. The analysis suggests a central support bar may fail to retract properly during folding, placing pressure on the inner display.
According to TrendForce, a foldable phone’s waterdrop hinge must balance two functions: providing rigid, stable support when unfolded and retracting to give the display enough clearance to bend smoothly when folded. If the support structure fails to retract properly, it can create localized stress that damages the display. Initial market feedback and teardown analyses suggest this mechanical issue is the primary concern.
Meanwhile, MacRumors has reported that Apple acknowledged an issue affecting the inner displays of a small number of iPhone Duo units. The tech giant didn’t disclose the cause of the cracking or whether a fix is planned. Affected customers have been able to obtain in-store replacements, although limited inventory has left some waiting, MacRumors notes.
Despite all the issues, Apple has asked Foxconn and component suppliers to raise its iPhone Duo shipment target for the next 12 months by 44%, from 9.7 million to 14 million units, according to NewsPim. Industry sources suggest the increase reflects both stronger-than-expected initial demand and additional component stockpiling to prepare for potential assembly defects. Foxconn’s final assembly yield was reportedly around 60% in September, while hinge-related defects could further increase demand for replacement OLED panels, the report notes.
TrendForce notes that early reports of screen failures could undermine consumer confidence in Apple’s high-profile launch, particularly among first-time foldable phone buyers. However, the long-term impact will largely depend on how widespread the issue is and how quickly Apple identifies the root cause and repairs or replaces affected units, the report adds.
