Apple’s iPhone Duo fails JerryRigEverything’s latest durability test

Apple's iPhone Duo has failed JerryRigEverything's latest durability test.

Apple’s iPhone Duo has failed JerryRigEverything’s latest durability test, as noted by MacRumors.

The test says that, despite its IP68 dust-resistance rating, dust entered the hinge through several ingress points, overwhelming the magnets that hold the phone shut. The bend test then left a permanent green line across the inner display, before the screen became unresponsive.

JerryRigEverthing says the outer screen with Ceramic Shield 2 scratched at level 7 on the Mohs scale, but the inner screen only managed level 2. Credit was given for its matte nano-texture coating making marks “magically disappear,” per the test.

This follows reports that some iPhone Duos are already experiencing hinge issues that cause display cracks. This is based on photos shared on Reddit and the MacRumors forums. Almost all of the display faults are right along the hinge, and most result in a line of bright pixels across one side of the screen, acceding to reports. I’ve seen no data on exactly how many of the foldable iPhones are affected. However, a blog post from iFixIt offers some possible reasons for the durability issues.

However, AppleInsider says “the amount of effort required to seriously damage the internal display without breaking the central creased section nor the hinge shows that it’s not as fragile as people may think.”

The folks at AppleInsider add that they called sources we have worked with for over 15 years that work inside Apple Genius bars at seven stores, including four major flagships. None of the stores polled have seen any devices in for service or returned because of broken screens, according to the report.

The iPhone Duo is available in star white and night sky with prices starting at US $1,999 or $83.29 per month for 24 months, in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB storage capacities. However, current shipping times for late (as in past 5 pm Pacific on October 19) have shipped into January.
