Why is your WiFi slow? Here are some reasons (and solutions)

It’s annoying that the WiFi is slow in life. Sometimes it may take several hours to download a video.

There are many factors resulting in a slow WiFi in terms of your device: your network situation, router performance, etc. In this article we’ll list several reasons leading to the slow WiFi in the aspect of router performance and network situation.

Part I. Why is Your WiFi Slow?

Internet Connection Type. The type of your Internet connection will also influence the WiFi network. Nowadays, people often use DSL, cabling, or an optical fiber network. The highest speed of DSL just exceeds 100Mbps and the electrical signals will always get worse with the increase of distance.

Cable Internet can reach up to 1,200Mbps, which is faster than DSL. Compared with others, the optical fiber network would be the best choice. Because the latency is the lowest and it’s capable of carrying much more bandwidth and provides a speed of up to 5,000Mbps. Network congestion also seldom occurs.

WiFi Standard

The WiFi standard that your wireless router supports is essential. From WiFi 4 (802.11) to WiFi 6 (802.11ax), different WiFi standard supports different frequency and provides different performance. The old router may only support WiFi 4 with a speed of 54Mbit/s.

Now most latest WiFi routers support WiFi 6 with dual bands of 2.4GHz and 5GHz. 2.4GHz has better penetration ability and covers larger areas. As for 5GHz, it has higher transmission rates and is not easily interfered with.

Too Many Users and Devices

The WiFi router won’t reduce the Internet speed when there are many users. However, the available bandwidth may decrease. You can stop any traffic or downloads to lighten the pressure of connecting to the Internet. In addition, do you know how many smart home products in your house connect to WiFi?

Many types of equipment are downloading and uploading files in the background, taking up bandwidth. Faced with this situation, it’s advisable to select routers that support MU-MIMO which allows one AP to communicate with multiple devices at the same time.

WiFi Extender

Some people will use a WiFi extender to extend the WiFi signals when their house is too large and the WiFi signals can’t reach each corner. An extender extends the WiFi coverage by rebroadcasting the WiFi signals. If you are using a single-band WiFi extender instead of a dual-band one, then it can’t send and receive the signals at the same time so the speed will slow down.

Therefore, it’s recommended to use mesh WiFi network in spite of the WiFi extender. Mesh networking adopts multi-hop, which is more flexible and stable. It will lose a part of the signals when the router sends signals to the WiFi extender and the devices. However, there is no consumption for the mesh WiFi.

Position of the WiFi Router

The position where the WiFi router is placed will influence the signal transmission. It’s better to place the router at a central location. What’s more, there should be few obstacles around the wireless router in that all obstacles like furniture, walls, and other things will weaken the WiFi signals.

Update router firmware

If you don’t upgrade the firmware of the router as needed some advanced functions may be missed. Nowadays some old routers’ firmware still has to be updated manually.

Part II. V-SOL WiFi 6 Router—Improve Your Internet Experience

A great router can improve slow WiFi. V-SOL just releases a router HG5000-5G4AX supporting WiFi 6 and dual bands. The WiFi 6 router provides 4x Gigabit LAN ports, 1x Gigabit WAN port, and 1x USB3.0 port. The speed can reach up to 3Gbps, which is 3 times more than the WiFi 5 router.

The Mu-MIMO of WiFi 6 allows multiple terminals to share one channel at the same time, achieving up to 4x capacity. Moreover, the WiFi 6 OFDM conducts to reducing about 75% latency by enabling the communication of more data to more devices. About 30% of power consumption will be saved.

There are four high-power FEMs, which improve the coverage of the network and make strong signals easily throughout the home to bring out best speed and efficiency. It also supports IPV6, gust network, Anti-DDos attack prevention and WPA3.
