Apple wants to replace the iPhone Duo‘s existing Touch ID with Face ID as soon as possible, Apple Intelligence might help, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says in his latest “Power On” newsletter (a subscription is required to read the article).
The lack of Face ID and the lack of a true telephoto lenses have been the main two complaints about the foldable iPhone. However, implementation of Face ID might not happen until teh third iteration of the iPhone Duo, which probably won’t arrive until 2028.
Gurman thinks Apple Intelligence could help with image processing, as well as the smartphone’s computational photography. This means Apple cloud use less sophisticated depth-sensing camera systems and let AI take over more of the processing role.
This could result in smaller, physical Face ID components that might make Face ID feasible on the iPhone Duo. Gurman says that Apple is also working on ways to add a telephone lens to the foldable smartphone.
