Apple is reportedly on the hunt for AI chip companies and technologies it can acquire, according to The Information (a subscription is required to read the article).
Apple already extends its Private Cloud Compute (PCC) architecture into third-party servers, partnering with companies like Google and NVIDIA. The tech giant originally attempted to run complex models (like Google’s Gemini) on internal servers using in-house M2 Ultra chips. These Mac-based chips hit performance ceilings, leading Apple to outsource heavier server workloads to NVIDIA-powered servers within Google Cloud.
So now, per The Information, Apple is pursuing in-house data center hardware. Apple has already started shipping its custom, American-made AI servers from a manufacturing plant in Houston, Texas, to support its cloud features.
What’s more, the company is currently developing dedicated AI server chips—like the future M5 and M7 Ultra chips—and is in discussions to acquire specialized AI chip startups.
