A new article at The MacObserver says that the rumored “MacBook Ultra” might hurt iPad sales.
It probably will. But that’s okay. After all, Apple’s former head of marketing Phil Schiller once said that Apple didn’t mind if some products cannibalized its products — as long as it was other Apple products doing the cannibalizing.
Why might the rumored “MacBook Ultra” dig into iPad sales. It’s rumored to be the first Mac with a touchscreen. What’s more, it’s expected to offer a cellular option. That’s something the iPad has long offered, but not the Mac.
However, I suspect that the iPad Air, iPad mini, and the vanilla iPad won’t be hurt. Likely, iPad Pro suffer most from the arrival of the MacBook Ultra. Pricing for the iPad Pro starts at $999 for the 11-inch model and $1,299 for the 13-inch model. The price increases depending on the storage capacity (up to 2TB) and whether you choose the Wi-Fi + Cellular model or specialty nano-texture glass.
Pricing for the MacBook Ultra is projected to start at approximately $2,499 for the 14-inch model and $2,999 for the 16-inch model, with fully configured options climbing significantly higher. Those wanting a touchscreen experience without paying a premium price will likely still go for the non-Pro iPads.
