I still think we’ll see the ‘iPhone Fold/Ultra’ late this year

iPhone Fold/Ultra concept

I’m skeptical, but wcctech claims Apple’s launch timeline for its first foldable has slipped from the fall of 2026 to early 2027 “amid an onslaught of engineering and supply chain-related challenges.”

The article says that Apple is encountering difficulties related to the intricate hinge mechanism of its foldable iPhone (which may be dubbed the”iPhone Fold” or “iPhone Ultra”), replete with worrying “rattling” noises that supposedly emanated when the hinge was rotated to open and close the foldable. Wcctech bases its prediction on an Asian publication that’s “come forward with a striking report.”

However, the Sellers Research Group (that’s me) still thinks we’ll see the iPhone Fold/Ultra arrive this year, though it may be October or November before it’s in consumers’ hands. I do think that Apple has faced hinge issues on the foldable, but is close to resolving them.

Here’s a round-up of rumors about the foldable iPhone:

° It will use a dual-layer, ultra-thin glass structure to reduce display crease visibility.

° Apple will offer the iPhone Fold/Ultra in three different storage capacities.

° The foldable smartphone will purportedly be offered in 236GB, 512GB, and 1TB options for US$2,320, $2,610, and $2,900, respectively.

° It will feature an interior foldable display roughly the size of an iPad mini. There also will be an external screen that’s about the size of the display on a small iPhone.

° Apple is developing new iOS app layouts and revamping its core iPhone programs to add sidebars along the left edge of the screen, similar to many of its iPad apps.

° The iPhone Fold/Ultra will have: a 7.8-inch inner display; a crease depth controlled to under 0.15 mm; and a crease angle under 2.5 degrees.

As for other iPhones, I think we’ll see the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max in September or October, and a “standard” iPhone 18 and an iPhone 18e in early 2027.
