In an X post, the Weibo-based leaker “Instant Digital” said Apple has ditched its plans for a foldable iPad (an “iPad Ultra”). That’s no surprise.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says in his latest “Power On” newsletter that a foldable tablet is (or was) still in the works at Apple, but may remain an “unreleased experiment.” An “iPad Fold/iPad Ultra” has been rumored for years. However, with a foldable iPhone and a “MacBook Ultra” with a touchscreen coming, that ship has likely sailed. There may simply be no need for such a device.
Various rumors about an “iPad Fold” may claimed that: a) it would have under-display Face ID, b) an 18.8-inch or 20.3-inch display when unfolded, and c) would utilize LG-made ultra-thin cover glass or Samsung display technology.
Of course, Apple has abandoned products in the past only to revive them later: the full-size HomePod and Apple-branded displays. If the “iPad Ultra” is dead for now, it could come back to life later.
