Apple may integrate ads into Apple Maps starting next year

Apple has apparently axed the Flyover feature of Apple Maps with iOS 26, “but its removal went largely unnoticed,” reports macRumors.

Apple may integrate ads into Apple Maps starting next year, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says in his new “Power On” newsletter.

The idea, apparently, is to allow businesses such as restaurants to pay to have their details featured more prominently in the app’s search feature. The Sellers Research Group (that’s me) thinks this is a bad idea. Apple is making boatloads of money within having to subject users to more ads.

“A few years ago, Apple employees explored integrating search ads into its Maps apps,” Gurman has said. “It would work similarly to Google Maps, where a business could pay Apple to have their restaurant or venue appear higher in search results.”

Power On is exclusively for Bloomberg.com subscribers. Get the full Power On newsletter every week — plus unlimited access to every featured article and a Q&A with Gurman— when you subscribe to the Tech Newsletter Bundle.
