GM has made a U-turn and will be offering Apple’s CarPlay into its latest infotainment system three years after saying it was ditching the product, reports Bloomberg (a subscription is required to read the article).
Debuting in a redesigned infotainment system for the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500, phone mirroring will now coexist alongside GM’s native controls.”We listen to our customers, what they want, and, going forward will still have projection in our trucks,” GM’s executive director of connected apps and services Michael Wahlstrom, told Bloomberg. “We worked with both Apple and Google to develop a new split screen that includes the projection experience right next to the native experience.”
Following customer backlash after phasing out phone mirroring in its electric vehicles, General Motors developed a compromise layout. Rather than letting Apple CarPlay fully take over the dashboard display, the new software features a picture-in-picture style solution.
CarPlay will open inside a large, dedicated window or contextual card rather than expanding full-screen. While your phone projection is active, critical truck-specific functions—like trailering data, off-road settings, and vehicle gauges—remain permanently visible on the split-screen layout.
