Yikes! Apple Intelligence is taking up to 30GB (or more) on some Macs running macOS 27, reports MacRumors.
From the article: For macOS 27 Golden Gate, Apple says the latest Apple Intelligence features require up to 14GB of on-device storage on Macs with an M3 chip or later and at least 12GB of unified memory, and up to 8GB of storage for other Apple Intelligence-enabled Macs. But in our experience, AI model storage allocation appears to be considerably higher on some Macs than others.
Apple Intelligence is Apple’s personal AI system deeply integrated into the 27-software releases across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, featuring an overhauled Siri AI, generative writing tools, and on-device photo editing. Its key features are:
° Siri AI: Understands your personal context, reads what is on your screen, and takes actions across different apps.
° Writing Tools: Rewrites, proofreads, and summarizes text across apps like Mail, Notes, and Safari
° Image Creation: Generates custom images and emojis using Image Playground.

Recent updates removed the master switch to completely disable the feature and delete the downloaded models, meaning the storage remains occupied.
As MacRumors notes, after you install macOS 27 Golden Gate, Apple automatically downloads a multi-gigabyte AI model to your Mac the next time it’s connected to the internet. Unlike previous versions of macOS, you can’t prevent it. Siri AI, and by extension Apple Intelligence, are now a mandatory part of your system.
