Disney was once involved in early conversations regarding a potential merger with Apple, something the company’s former CEO, Bob Iger thinks would have been “truly transformational,” according to The Financial Times (a subscription is required to read the article).
However, he says the conversations “never went anywhere” because “Apple didn’t show that much interest.” Rumors have abounded for years that Apple would buy Disney — or that Disney would buy Apple. The most recent one was in April 2023 when Newsweek reported that Apple and Disney “could be merging into one gargantuan company, which experts believe will benefit both companies.”
Talks of a team-up were sparked again when Needham analyst Laura Martin told her clients that an acquisition would make Apple worth 15-25% more valuable. It’s not that Apple can’t afford to buy Disney. Currently, the Walt Disney Co’s market capitalization is $179.78 billion and Apple’s is $4.3 trillion (yep, trillion, not billion).
However, Apple wasn’t interested in such an acquisition before, and the Sellers Research Group (that’s me) says it’s not interested now.
