How to use location-based alerts in iOS, iPadOS

Notifications alert you to many things on your iPhone and iPad, including incoming messages, new emails, and calendar events. You can even set up location-based alerts.

1. Enabling Location Permissions

Before setting up your alerts, verify your device has the correct permissions to track your location. 

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap Privacy & Security, then select Location Services.
  3. Ensure the master switch at the top is turned On.
  4. Scroll down and tap Reminders (or Find My), and set access to While Using the App.
  5. Ensure the toggle for Precise Location is turned On.

2. Creating Location-Based Reminders

You can use the Reminders app to trigger a notification when you arrive at or leave a specific spot (like your office in downtown Nashville).

  1. Open the Reminders app and tap + New Reminder.
  2. Type in your task (e.g., “Submit expense reports”).
  3. Tap the Info (i) button or the Details button next to the reminder.
  4. Turn on the toggle switch next to Location.
  5. Tap Custom to type in an address or select from presets like Home, Work, Getting in Car, or Getting out of Car.
  6. Choose whether you want the alert when Arriving or Leaving that location.
  7. Adjust the radius of the geofence using the blue dot on the map if you need a larger or smaller trigger zone, then tap Done
