Don’t expect Face ID to come to the Mac anytime soon

Don’t look for Face ID coming to the Mac anytime soon. According to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman, Apple plans to move from Touch ID to Face ID on its laptops and desktops, just not anytime soon.

Rumors of Face ID coming to the Mac have been around for years. In fact, in 2021 Gurman predicated we’d see it coming in “a couple of years.”

And Apple has been granted patents for desktops and laptops with the facial recognition software since 2017. For example, patent number 20170193282 for “presence sensing” described how Macs in sleep mode could use their camera to look for faces. If the desktop or laptop spotted a face, it would use facial recognition to wake the Mac if the user is identified.

In March 2020, Apple was granted a patent for a “light recognition module for determining a user of a computing device.” It’s for “a light pattern recognition module that is capable of emitting a predetermined pattern of light at the user, and subsequently detecting a pattern of light that is reflected by the user for authenticating the user.” And that’s how Face ID works on the iPhone and iPad.

  • Mac is a much versatile computer. The old adage of one person sitting in front of a Mac are gone. With wireless keyboard and mouse you may be in front of the Mac and one person on one side of the Mac and another one on other side. Two to three people may share a Mac specially in emerging markets. iPhone is personal and needs a Face ID, Mac is universal and needs login name and password. The best you can do is all three people have their own Touch ID.
