Nissan: nope, we’re not talking with Apple about building an ‘Apple Car’

Despite rumors to the contrary, Nissan says it’s not talking with Apple about partnering on an “Apple Car.” Well, not yet anyway.

“We are not in talks with Apple,” a Nissan spokesperson told Reuters. “However, Nissan is always open to exploring collaborations and partnerships to accelerate industry transformation.”

According to Reuters, Nissan declined to comment on reports that there had been brief initial talks with Apple. Those talks are said to have been preliminary, and not involving senior management.

However, according to a February 9 Wall Street Journal report, Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida said his company was open to a deal in response to a question during a press conference about the company’s latest financial results.

As technology transforms the auto industry, “we need to take new initiatives” and “work with companies that are knowledgeable, with good experience, through partnership and collaboration,” he said.

The Nissan Motor Company is a Japanese multinational automobile manufacturer headquartered in Nishi-ku, Yokohama, Japan. It sells its vehicles under the Nissan, Infiniti, and Datsun brands.
