The myFlipShade is a good idea that doesn’t work (for me, anyway)

MyCharge’s myFlipShade is a disappointing implementation of a good idea to a common problem.

The problem: I’m mowing my lawn and get a text message on my iPhone X. I pull it from my pocket and …. can’t read a darn thing because of the sun’s glare. Go to the beach or any pool this summer and you’re likely to spot others in a similar predicament: trying to read or watch something on their iPhone in the bright sunshine.

The $9.99 myFlipShade is the solution to the problem — for some folks. It attaches to the back of your iPhone, and folds out to pop up a little umbrella shade to shield your screen from the sun. When not in use, it folds onto the back of your phone out of the way.

It can also be used as a stand to view videos or read hands-free. Finally, not only does the myFlipShade work as a screen shield, but it also works as a privacy screen when you’re in crowded spaces such as public transport.

Here’s the problem: the myFlipShade is advertised as being able to be used with your phone in a case, but that’s not the case (pun intended). I attached it to the back of the Apple Leather Case I have on my iPhone X, and the umbrella shades wouldn’t press down flat on the smartphone’s screen.

They stick out just enough that they “hang” on my pants pocket if I try to insert the iPhone. And they protrude enough that I can’t place an iPhone X/Leather Case/myFlipShade into the phone “holster” I wear on my belt most of the time.

If you want to use the myCharge product without a case, it pops on and off the iPhone easily with an adhesive (which, in my experiments, left no marks on the device) and works as advertised. Personally, I’d rather have the protection of the case than reduced glare on my iPhone. And I suspect that constantly removing the myFlipShade would wear off the adhesive over time.

Still, if you like the idea of an inexpensive iPhone screen shield, privacy protector, and stand all-in-on, this may be for you. The myFlipShade works with the iPhone X, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, and iPhone 6s Plus.
