Mac sales slip slightly in both the U.S. and worldwide in 2018

Mac sales slipped 2.1% in the U.S. between the fourth quarter of 2017 and the fourth quarter of 2018, and 5% during that time period, according to new data from Gartner.

The research group says Apple sold 1.7 million Macs during the fourth quarter of 2018. That’s down from 1.8 million in the fourth quarter of 2017. That gives the Mac 12.1% share of the U.S. market compared to 12.4% in the year-ago period.

Ahead of Apple in the U.S. market are: HP (33.4% market share in quarter four of 2018), Dell (25.7%), and Lenovo (15.2%).

Globally, Gartner says Apple sold 18 million Macs during 2018. That’s down from 18.9 million in. That gives the Mac 6.9% share of the worldwide PC market compared to 7.2% in the year-ago period.

Ahead of Apple in the global market are: Lenovo (22.5% market share in 2018), HP (21.7%) and Dell (16.2%).

Meanwhile, per the IDC research group, Apple remained in the fourth position with market share of 7.2% and year-on-year growth of -3.8% worldwide in the fourth quarter of 2018. Ahead of Apple in the global market are: Lenovo (24.6% market share in quarter four of 2018), HP (23.6%) and Dell (16.5%).

Neither Gartner nor IDC count iPads among PC sales. This, of course, would make a big difference in the final numbers.
