Mac sales continue to tick upwards in the second quarter of 2018

The Mac continues to see sales growth, although a bit slower than in the past. Worldwide PC (as in “personal computer,” not necessarily a Windows machine) shipments totaled 62.1 million units in the second quarter of 2018, a 1.4% increase from the second quarter of 2017, according to preliminary results by Gartner, Inc.

Globally, the Mac has 7.1% market share as of the second quarter of 2018, compared to 7% in the second quarter of 2017. Sales are up 3% year-over-year with Apple selling approximately 4.4 Macs in quarter two of 2018.

Worldwide, Lenovo and HP were tied for first place with 21.9% market share each, followed by Dell with 16.8% Trailing Apple is Acer with 6.4% market share.

In the U.S., the Mac has 12.7% market share as of the second quarter of 2018, the same percentages as in the second quarter of 2017. Sales are up 1.7% year-over-year with Apple selling approximately 1.8 Macs in the U.S. in quarter two of 2018.

In the U.S., HP has the most market share at 29.3%, followed by Dell (28.6%) and Lenovo (14.9%). Trailing Apple is Acer with 3.3%.

Interestingly, Gartner’s study includes desk-based PCs, notebook PCs and ultramobile premiums (such as Microsoft Surface), but not Chromebooks or iPads. If iPads were included, Apple would be the global leader both globally and in the U.S.

Macs have gained global market share for 38 out of the last 40 quarters.
