Survey: U.S. consumers would buy cars from Apple and Google

<p>TECHnalysis Research recently surveyed 1,000 U.S. consumers who both own a car and are planning to purchase a new one within the next two years. The results — as noted by <a target="_blank" href="https://www.fastcompany.com/3063342/platform-wars/survey-says-yes-us-consumers-will-buy-cars-from-apple-and-google" rel="noopener noreferrer">Fast Company</a> — show that half of the respondents would give at “least moderate” consideration to purchasing a car from a tech company. </p>

Gartner: iPhone sales to be weaker this year, but revive in 2017

<p><a target="_blank" href="http://www.gartner.com" rel="noopener noreferrer">Gartner. Inc</a>. expects a weaker year-over-year volume performance from Apple in 2016, as volumes stabilize after a very strong 2015. As a result, the research group expects total smartphone market to only increase 4.5% with premium smartphones declining 1.1%  in 2016. However, there is some good news.</p>

Staples is now accepting Apple Pay on its mobile website

<p>Staples, Inc., has announced the availability of Apple Pay on <a target="_blank" href="http://m.staples.com" rel="noopener noreferrer">its mobile website</a>. The company’s business customers have already been using Apple Pay for purchases within the Staples iPhone app and in Staples’ stores. </p>

Rumor: Apple has a plan to improve its online/cloud services

<p>Apple fans have long complained about its online and cloud services. The company may be listening. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-10-06/apple-is-said-to-plan-improved-cloud-services-by-unifying-teams" rel="noopener noreferrer">Bloomberg says</a> that the Cupertino, California-based company plans to unify its separate Internet services groups into a single campus to better compete with Alphabet Inc.’s Google and Amazon, Inc. in the cloud.</p>

Analyst: iPhone sales will outperform Wall Street expectations in the December quarter

<p>In a note to clients — as noted by <a target="_blank" href="http://appleinsider.com/articles/16/10/05/supply-chain-suggests-apple-to-see-better-than-expected-holiday-season-analyst-says" rel="noopener noreferrer">AppleInsider</a> — RBC Capital Markets analyst Amit Daryanani to believe iPhone sales are set to outperform Wall Street expectations in the December quarter. He bases this on a positive earnings pre-announcement from Apple supplier Dialog Semiconductor yesterday.</p>

Rumor: Apple considering purchasing Netflix (and maybe it should)

<p>According to R.W. Baird financial analyst William Power, and <a href="http://www.marketwatch.com/story/disney-remains-center-of-merger-talk-this-time-its-netflix-2016-10-03">reported initially</a> by MarketWatch, Disney and (to a lesser degree) Apple are considering scooping up Netflix. I doubt it will happen, but there are valid reasons for our favorite tech company to make such a move.</p>

Apple: we would never use secret tools to spy on users

<p><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-exclusive-yahoo-secretly-scanned-customer-emails-for-us-intelligence-sources-2016-10">Reuters' Joseph Menn reported yesterday that Yahoo had reportedly created custom software that would scan all incoming emails in real-time</a>, and flag any that contained certain pre-defined keywords. Yahoo hasn't denied it, <a target="_blank" href="http://www.techinsider.io/apple-google-microsoft-twitter-deny-building-us-spy-software-yahoo-report-2016-10" rel="noopener noreferrer">saying in a brief statement</a> only that "Yahoo is a law-abiding company and complies with the laws of the United States.”</p>
