Apple Daily Report for May 15, 2018

Steve is out of pocket this week, so the AWT News Update is on a brief hiatus. In its place, I’ll offer a text-only (no podcast) summary of breaking stories with a tip o’ my hat to my former website, Apple Daily Report.

John Carmack, best known for his work on iconic games that include Quake, Doom, and Wolfenstein 3D, took to Facebook to share details on his interactions with the late Steve Jobs and to provide some insight into Jobs’ opinion on gaming, what it was like working with Jobs, and what it felt like to participate in one of Jobs’ famous keynotes.

Ralph Nader has penned an open letter to Apple CEO Tim Cook urging him to suspend his company’s plan to to spend $100 Billion on stock buybacks.

Adobe has released a large security update that tackles 47 vulnerabilities only a week after the firm’s customary monthly patch round. The latest patch update impacts Adobe Acrobat and Reader and Photoshop CC for macOS and Windows.

The U.S. Supreme Court has refused to hear Personal Audio v. Electronic Frontier Foundation, handing victory over to the latter — and by extension, companies like Apple and Google.

In other legal news, Apple and Samsung headed back to court yesterday over the patent fight that started back in 2011. After Samsung finished its opening statement today, Apple brought its first witness to the stand: Greg Joswiak, vice president of product marketing, who said, “we were really risking everything that was making Apple successful at the time…We really were betting the company.”
