Apple CEO Tim Cook says Apple will donate to relief efforts for flooding in areas of Kentucky, Virginia, and West Virginia.
Here’s what he said in a tweet: “Our hearts are with everyone impacted by the devastating floods in Kentucky and surrounding states. To everyone in harm’s way, please stay safe. Apple will be donating to community relief and recovery efforts.”
The death toll from the flooding in eastern Kentucky continues to rise. According to WKYT, Governor Andy Beshear confirmed Monday evening that the death toll has risen to at least 37. The governor says refrigerator trucks are serving as mobile morgues to hold bodies as they are flown to the medical examiner’s office in Frankfort.
Beshear says the number of missing is in the hundreds. He says Search and rescue crews are still running into areas where it’s difficult to get to. The governor says more than 12,000 people are still without power, but that’s down from over 24,000 at the peak of the flooding.
The floods came last week when 8 to 10.5 inches of rain fell in just 48 hours in parts of eastern Kentucky, southern West Virginia, and western Virginia. The extreme flooding in the eastern part of Kentucky comes less than a year after parts of western Kentucky were slammed by a historic tornado outbreak that ravaged multiple cities this past December.
