You can capture iPhone screen content in High Dynamic Range (HDR). This applies to both screenshots (saved in HEIF format) and screen recordings (saved in HEVC HDR10 format). Keep in mind that HDR files require more storage space.
How to Enable HDR Screen Capture
Enabling this setting ensures your screenshots and screen recordings capture the full vibrancy and dynamic range of your display.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap General.
- Select Screen Capture.
- Under the Format heading, tap HDR.
Understanding the Trade-offs
When you switch your screen capture format to HDR, it affects how your files are saved and viewed:
- Screenshots: Captured in the HEIF format (rather than standard PNG). They retain significantly more color depth and brightness.
- Screen Recordings: Recorded using the HEVC HDR10 format.
- File Size: Because they store much more image and color data, HDR captures have noticeably larger file sizes than standard captures.
- Display Compatibility: To view the full brilliance of HDR screenshots and recordings, you need to view them on an HDR-compatible display. On standard displays, they will automatically fall back to SDR quality.
