Apple purportedly has no plans for M6 Pro, M6 Pro Max, or M6 Pro Ultra processors

In this week’s “Power On” newsletter Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says Apple will release a regular M6 chip, but not M6 Pro, M6 Max, or M6 Ultra processors.

“Apple had been planning major neural-processing upgrades for the M7 family and ultimately decided those improvements were important enough to justify accelerating the next generation rather than completing the M6 lineup,” he adds.

Gurman has previously said that Apple will roll out an updated 14-inch MacBook Pro with an M6 chip later this year, then another model with an M7 processor in the first half of 2027.

Why no M6 Pro, M6 Pro Max, or M6 Pro Ultra chips? Apparently, Apple feels it needs to concentrate more on the M7 line with its impressive AI performance.

“AI is no longer just another feature Apple’s chips need to support,” says Gurman. “It is now shaping how those products are designed and when they are shipped.”

Interestingly, Gurman says (and I find it hard to believe) that the rumored “MacBook Ultra” will come in M5 Pro and M5 Pro Max options, but none with an M6 chip. The Ultra is expected to be the first Mac laptop with a touchscreen, OLED display, and (possibly) cellular options.
