Apple may release Mac Studios with M5 Max and M6 Ultra processors this year

Apple may release Mac Studios with M5 Max and M6 Ultra processors this year.

Apple will update the Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips before year’s end, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The latter will be a new processor.

The current Mac Studio, released in early 2025, includes an M4 Max and M3 Ultra processor. An even more powerful Mac Studio is likely to arrive next year, Gurman says.

“There are two Mac Studio updates in Apple’s pipeline: an M5 Ultra version due this year and an M7 Ultra update targeted for 2028,” he expounds. “I’m told Apple has also been working on internal changes to the high-powered desktop, including a better heat sink to improve thermal performance as the machine takes on more demanding on-device AI workloads. I’m not expecting a major redesign, at least not with the M5 Ultra model.”

Apparently, there’ll be no M6-equipped Mac Studio. Last week Gurman reported that Apple may release an M6 chip for entry-level Macs this year, but it’s ditched plans for higher-end M6 Pro and M6 Max chips. Instead, Apple’s next Pro and Max chips will be part of its M7 chip lineup. Gurman says the first M7 chips will debut in 2027. According to his predictions, we’ll see the M6 in late 2026, the M7 in the first half of 2027, and both the M7 Pro and M7 Max at the end of 2027.
