Change How App Alerts are Grouped Together

To control whether alerts stack by app or appear automatically, modify the app’s internal notification properties:

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. Scroll down and tap the specific app you want to organize (e.g., Messages, Mail).
  4. Scroll to the bottom and tap Notification Grouping.
  5. Choose one of the three grouping styles:
    • Automatic: Your device intelligently groups notifications based on organizing criteria or threads.
    • By App: All incoming alerts from that single application are gathered into one single stack.
    • Off: Disables grouping so every single notification appears individually

Silence a Specific Group Chat (Messages / WhatsApp)

If you are trying to mute a noisy text or chat thread instead of changing system grouping, you can do it right from your messaging app:

  1. Open the Messages app (or your preferred chat app like WhatsApp).
  2. Locate the active group conversation.
  3. Swipe left across the group thread in your main conversation list.
  4. Tap the Options menu (or the purple/blue bell icon) and select Hide Alerts.
