New research from Omdia finds that OLED display shipments for laptops is expected to grow to $11.5 billion by 2033, accounting for approximately 16.2% of total OLED display revenue.
OLED display revenue for notebook computers is expected to reach US$4 billion in 2026, primarily driven by demand for Apple’s MacBook Pro series. Starting next month Samsung Display will supply OLED panels for Apple MacBook Pro series (14.3-inch and 16.3-inch), with the devices expected to launch in the third quarter 2026.
The laptop in question is the rumored “MacBook Ultra.” It will be the first Mac laptop with an OLED display. And it’s anticipated to have even more groundbreaking features.
The rumor mill says it will be the first Mac with a touchscreen. It will almost certainly pack an M6 processor. And, if we’re lucky, it will have cellular connectivity, at least as an option.
The MacBook Ultra is anticipated to arrive in late 2026. However, some reports say it may not arrive until early 2027.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says the MacBook Ultra will be offered alongside 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros. He did offer the caveat that Apple “could keep the traditional MacBook Pro name,” but a MacBook Ultra moniker would “more clearly signal their position at the top of the lineup.”
“Apple is adopting hybrid OLED for the MacBook Pro series based on oxide TFT and RGB tandem OLED technology,” said Jerry Kang, Practice Leader at Omdia. “This combination is being used for the first time in this form factor and is designed to reduce power consumption compared to LTPO and RGB single OLEDs.”
Over the past decade, most OLED displays for notebook PC have been based on the rigid OLED technology, similar to that used in mid-range smartphone OLEDs. However, anticipating rising demand for OLEDs in IT applications, such as tablets and notebook PCs, panel suppliers investing in Gen8.6 production capacity using a range of technologies, including LTPO and Oxide TFT-based processes.
