Scribble in iPadOS 26 allows you to use the Apple Pencil to write directly into any text field, converting handwriting into text, or to write within Notes/Freeform.

It’s enabled by default when an Apple Pencil is paired. Key features include editing gestures (scratch to delete, circle to select) and a handy floating toolbar.

Getting Started with Scribble

  1. Ensure it’s enabled: Go to Settings > Apple Pencil and confirm Scribble is toggled on.
  2. Write to type: Tap any text field (search bar, email, URL) with your Apple Pencil and start writing. The iPad will convert it to typed text.
  3. Using the Toolbar: A small toolbar will appear, offering tools like Undo or Show Keyboard to quickly switch to typing.

Advanced Scribble Gestures & Tips

  • Delete Text: Scratch out a word or sentence to delete it.
  • Select Text: Circle or draw a line through text to select it.
  • Join/Separate Letters: Draw a vertical line between characters to join or separate them.
  • Insert Text: Touch and hold in a space to insert text between existing words.
  • Notes/Freeform: In Apple Notes or Freeform, select the handwriting tool from the toolbar (marked with a pencil icon) to write directly on the page, with automatic conversion

Customization

  • Auto-minimize Toolbar: Tap the tool palette menu and select “Auto-minimize” to keep the toolbar out of the way.
  • Set up Language: Scribble supports multiple languages; verify settings in the Apple Pencil menu.
