Apple will allow third-party AI chatbots to integrate with a “more personalized” Siri as of iOS 27, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said in a Q&A session.

Apple plans to add an Extensions system to Siri that would allow the integration of other AI chatbots.

From Gurman: “Extensions allow agents from installed apps to work with Siri, the Siri app and other features on your devices,” according to a message inside test versions of the upcoming operating systems. Users will be directed to a new App Store section from this menu to add additional AI services.

An AI chatbot is a software program that simulates human-like conversations using artificial intelligence, specifically Natural Language Processing (NLP) and machine learning. Unlike rule-based bots, they understand context, learn from data, and generate dynamic responses rather than relying on fixed scripts, allowing them to assist with tasks like customer support, tutoring, and information retrieval. Examples include g ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot.

An iPhone user with a Claude or Gemini app installed will be able to send questions to those chatbots. Currently, if a user has a question that ‌Siri‌ cannot handle, ‌Siri‌ suggests sending it to ChatGPT. Users can also ask ‌Siri‌ to query ChatGPT.

Gurman says expanding ‌Siri‌ integration to other chatbots will allow Apple to generate more money from third-party AI subscriptions made through the ‌App Store‌.
