Apple’s Passkeys feature is a replacement for passwords that are “designed to provide websites and apps a password-less sign-in experience that is both more convenient and more secure.”
Apple says that Passkeys are a standard-based technology that, unlike passwords, are resistant to phishing, are always strong, and are designed so that there are no shared secrets. They’re designed to simplify account registration for apps and websites, are easy to use, and work across all of your Apple devices, and even non-Apple devices within physical proximity. Users can use Face ID and Touch ID to authenticate their account.
Here’s how to save a passkey for an account in iOS 26 and iPadOS 26:
° Open the App or Website: Go to the sign-in screen in Safari or a supported app.
° Select Account: Tap the username field.
° Use Passkey: Select the suggested passkey (usually labeled “Passkey for [name]” or with a key icon).
° Authenticate: Use Face ID or Touch ID to authenticate. If you do not have these set up, enter your device passcode.
Using a passkey on a different device
If you’re signing in on a computer or TV, you can use your iPhone/iPad to authenticate:
° On the sign-in screen, select “Other options” or “Passkey from nearby device”.
° Scan the QR code that appears with your iPhone/iPad camera.
° Confirm the sign-in on your mobile device using Face ID/Touch ID.
