How to change notification alert styles on your iPhone and iPad

On an iPhone and iPad, you can view and manage your notifications to minimize disruptions throughout the day.

Notifications alert you to many things on your iPhone and iPad, including incoming messages, new emails, and calendar events. Notifications work slightly differently for each app; however, you can view and manage your notifications to minimize disruptions throughout the day.

Here’s how to customize notification alerts:

  • Access Notification Settings: Open the Settings app and tap “Notifications”.
  • Select an App: Scroll down to the “Notification Style” list and tap the specific app you want to customize.
  • Adjust Alert Styles:
    • Allow Notifications: Toggle this to turn off all alerts for the app.
    • Alerts: Choose between Banners (disappear automatically) or Alerts (remain until you act).
    • Banner Style (if Banners is selected): Choose “Temporary” or “Persistent”.
    • Sounds: Toggle to allow or disallow sound alerts.
    • Badges: Toggle to show or hide the red number on the app icon.
  • Configure Lock Screen Appearance: Select whether notifications appear on the Lock Screen, in the Notification Center, or as Banners.
  • Show Previews: Tap this to choose if you want to see content (e.g., message text) on the lock screen (“Always,” “When Unlocked,” or “Never”)
