The ‘iPhone Fold’ may feature an interior foldable display the size of an iPad mini

The "iPhone Fold" may feature an interior foldable display the size of an iPad mini.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has some new details on what we can expect from Apple’s first foldable smartphone: the “iPhone Fold” (or perhaps it will be dubbed the “iPhone Fold”).

From his latest report: The product — Apple’s long-awaited entry into the category — will feature an interior foldable display roughly the size of an iPad mini, according to people with knowledge of the matter. There also will be an external screen that’s about the size of the display on a small iPhone.

…. Apple is developing new iOS app layouts and revamping its core iPhone programs to add sidebars along the left edge of the screen, similar to many of its iPad apps. Developers will also be able to adapt their iPhone software for the new interface, which will use proportions similar to an iPad in landscape mode.

Gurman says the iPhone Fold don’t run similarly sized iPad mini or offer a windowing system a la iPadOS 26.

When it comes to the foldable iPhone, Apple manufacturing partners have received orders from tech giant for the upcoming “iPhone Fold,” according to the Weibo account “Fixed Focus Digital” — as noted by MacRumors. According to the rumor, the foldable iPhone will have:

° A 7.8-inch inner display;

° A crease depth controlled to under 0.15 mm. Crease depth refers to how deep the groove or indentation at the fold is. A smaller number means the crease is shallower and less noticeable to the eye and to the touch.

° The crease angle is said to be under 2.5 degrees. Crease angle describes how sharp the fold line appears when the display is unfolded, which is measured as the angle formed at the crease area. A smaller angle indicates a smoother, flatter transition across the fold, rather than a sharp ridge or valley.

Meanwhile, Trendforce has rounded up various rumors about the “iPhone Fold”:

° According to South Korean outlet The Elec, Apple is reviewing the use of transparent polyimide (PI) film as the protective layer placed on top of the ultra-thin glass (UTG) cover window for its debut foldable product, which is expected to launch in the second half of this year. The report says Apple is evaluating both polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film and transparent PI film as candidates for the protective layer applied over UTG. With Apple reportedly weighing PI film, Kolon Industries has emerged as a potential supplier.

° According to PhoneArena, Apple may revise button placement, with the foldable iPhone’s volume buttons reportedly moving to the top-right edge instead of the left side. The power button—doubling as Touch ID—and the camera control button would remain on the right. The report notes that consolidating all buttons on one side avoids routing ribbon cables across the folding area, reducing potential hinge failure points over time.

° According to MacRumors, the internal structure is said to adopt a stacked architecture, with most of the space dedicated to the display and battery. This means the device may feature the largest battery ever used in an iPhone. The iPhone Fold may include a 5.5-inch cover display, Touch ID, dual rear cameras, the A20 chip, and the “C2” modem.
