In an effort to reduce the space the Face ID system takes up in the iPhone Air, according to the leaker known as “Instant Digital” — as noted by MacRumors.

He/she says the tech giant has requested an “ultra-thin” Face ID component from suppliers that will allow second gen of the thinnest-ever iPhone to accommodate an ultra wide-angle lens in addition to the existing single main lens. A redesign that includes a second camera is said to be one way that Apple thinks it can address user complaints that the iPhone Air, while an impressive design feat, has led to too many hardware compromises, especially given the US$999 price tag, notes MacRumors.

The second gen iPhone Air will launch in either late 2026 or 2027, depending on which rumors you believe. Except for China, where it’s a hit, the thinnest iPhone ever is widely believed to be a sales disappointment.
