There have been rumors of a low cost Mac laptop from Apple coming next spring.
The rumors suggest that, surprisingly, the new laptop will be built on an iPhone chip. This allows for the lower price and bridges the gap between iPads with auxiliary keyboards and Mac laptops.
The current mix of Mac models, with laptops accounting for four out of five units sold suggests that Apple would be on target to dive deeper into that category, according to a new report from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners. Current and historic pricing and features reinforce the idea that current and potential Mac buyers may be ready for a more modest Mac laptop, says CIRP.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman the laptop will cost “well under $1,000” and it will compete with affordable Windows machines and Chromebooks. He says it will be Apple’s first “low cost” laptop. Apple’s lowest priced Mac notebook right now is the MacBook Air, which starts at $999.
And that wasn’t the first rumor about a low cost Mac laptop. A June 30 X post by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said Apple plans to release a MacBook powered by an A18 Pro processor. Kuo claimed such a laptop will enter mass production ini the fourth quarter of 2025 or early 2026. He said the Mac laptop will sport a 13-inch display with potential casing colors include silver, blue, pink, and yellow.
“Apple aims to return total MacBook shipments to the COVID-19 peak of around 25 million units in 2026 (vs. an estimated 20 million units in 2025),” Kuo said. “The more-affordable MacBook is projected to account for 5–7 million units for 2026.”
