How to make a Genmoji in iOS 26

Genmoji is an Apple feature that lets users create custom emojis using generative AI by typing a description or choosing from a person in their photo library.

To make a Genmoji in iOS 26, open the Messages app, tap the emoji icon on the keyboard, then tap the Genmoji icon (a multi-colored smiley face with a plus sign). 

Describe your desired Genmoji in the text field or by combining existing emojis, and swipe through the generated options to select the one you want, then tap Add to send it in your message.  

Her’s a step-by-step guide:

  1. Open the Messages app: on your iPhone. 
  2. Start a new conversation: or select an existing one. 
  3. Tap the text field: to bring up the keyboard. 
  4. Tap the emoji icon: in the bottom-left corner of the keyboard. 
  5. Tap the Genmoji icon: in the top-right of the emoji keyboard (it looks like a rainbow-colored smiley face with a plus symbol). 
  6. Create your Genmoji:
    • Type a description: in the input field (e.g., “dog with sunglasses”). 
    • Alternatively, tap the gray smiley icon to open the full emoji keyboard, then select existing emojis and themes to combine them into a new Genmoji. 
  1. Swipe through options: to see different variations of the Genmoji. 
  2. Tap “Add”: to insert the Genmoji into your message.

    You can combine words, themes, and existing emojis into a single, custom Genmoji. 
  • Suggestions:
    A row of suggestions for expressions, accessories, and themes will appear to help shape your idea.

    Once created, you can use your Genmoji as a sticker, in a tapback, or inline as you type.

    You can create a Genmoji based on someone in your photo library
