How to scan QR codes with your iPhone or iPad

You can scan QR codes without the need for a third-party app by using your iPhone or iPad.

You can scan QR codes without the need for a third-party app by using your iPhone or iPad. Here’s how to do this in iOS 16 or iOS 17:

open the Camera app or Code Scanner, point the camera at the QR code, and tap the notification that appears on your screen to open the link or information within the code. The built-in Camera app can automatically detect and scan QR codes on devices running iOS 11 or later.

Using the Camera App (for most devices):

  1. Open the Camera app from your Home Screen, Lock Screen, or by swiping to the Control Center.
  2. Point your iPhone or iPad’s camera steadily at the QR code, ensuring it is clearly visible in the viewfinder.
  3. Tap the notification that pops up at the top of the screen to open the link or information associated with the QR code.

Using the Code Scanner (add it to Control Center):

  1. Open Control Center by swiping down from the top-right corner of your screen or up from the bottom, depending on your model.
  2. Tap the Code Scanner button (if you’ve added it to Control Center).
  3. Position the QR code within the scanner’s frame to automatically detect and read it.

If Scanning Doesn’t Work:

  • Check your iOS version: Ensure your device is running iOS 11 or later for native QR code scanning.
  • Ensure the code is clear: Hold the device steadily for a few seconds to allow the camera to recognize the code.
  • Adjust settings: If necessary, navigate to your iPhone’s or iPad’s Settings app to enable QR code scanning, though this is usually on by default.
