Apple may release a slimmer MacBook Pro with an OLED display next year

But do we really need/want a skinner pro laptop?

Apple plans to release a MacBook Pro with a slimmer design and OLED display next year, according to the Korean site, The Elec.

This isn’t the first rumor of an upgrade of the pro laptop with an OLED display. MacBook Pros with OLED displays have been said to be coming soon for over three years. Samsung was purportedly talking with Apple about supplying OLED displays a Mac laptop in May 2019, according to the Korean site The Elec as noted and translated by MacRumors. That same year Kuo forecast a 16-inch (perhaps 17-inch) Mac laptop with an OLED display.

And in a November 2024 report Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said Apple is working to make the MacBook Pro and Apple Watch thinner. However, I have some concerns.

A thinner Apple Watch makes sense, and perhaps a thinner iPhone, but do we really need a slimmer Mac? If Apple whittles down the size of Mac laptops, would battery life be reduced? Would durability?

Admittedly, I may be in the minority in hoping for a thinner MacBook Pro. Macworld’s Roman Loyola has a must-read article dubbed “Why I can’t wait to switch to a thinner MacBook Pro.” He makes some compelling arguments. Let’s just hope Apple proceeds with caution.

But speaking of the 2026 MacBook Pro, it’s expected to have an M6 chip with a 2025 upgrade adding the M5 processor. The 2026 model is expected to debut to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the MacBook Pro line.
