Apple’s ‘MacBook Ultra’ will purportedly have a ‘significantly lighter’ design

A 'MacBook Ultra' concept

Apple’s  rumored “MacBook Ultra’ will have a “significantly lighter design,” according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his latest “Power On” newsletter (a subscription is required for reading it). He doesn’t says exactly how much lighter.

“The new MacBook Pros are lighter — significantly lighter. Apple has reengineered the machine’s interior miniaturizing parts and rearranging components to make the computer much easier to carry,” Gurman writes. “

The current 16-inch MacBook Pro weighs as much as 4.8 pounds, compared with 3.3 pounds for the 15-inch MacBook Air, so any meaningful reduction would be immediately noticeable.

The MacBook Ultra (which is the rumored name, not something Apple has confirmed) is expected to be the first touchscreen Mac. It should have an OLED display, run M5 Pro and M5 Max processors, include a Dynamic Island instead of a notch, and (hopefully) have cellular connectivity options.

Apple is testing the laptops with macOS 27.2, which is currently in beta, Gurman has said. The software update is expected to be released towards the end of October, so the touch-screen MacBook Pro (expected to be dubbed the “MacBook Ultra”) models might be announced later this month. If not, early November seems likely.
