The upcoming foldable iPhone — which may be dubbed the “iPhone Fold” or the “iPhone Ultra” — will have a liquid metal hinge, according to an X post by the leaker known as “Fixed Focus Digital.”
This could help overcome some rumored issues. The foldable has encountered setbacks in its recent trial production phase, the Weibo leaker known as “Instant Digital” claimed in an X post.
He/she says that, regarding screen creases, Apple has essentially acknowledged the issue, and current test results have indeed demonstrated the ability to maintain a visually crease-free state over the long term. Now the core card point is the hinge.
“Instant Digital” says reliability after long-term high-frequency opening and closing has never reached Apple’s quality control pass line. If this mechanical‑loss issue isn’t resolved soon, the launch of the first foldable iPhone will be delayed.
The iPhone Fold/Ultra is still expected to arrive this year — sometime after the roll-out of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in September or October. However, if design issues aren’t resolved, it could be pushed to early 2027, when the standard iPhone 18 and an iPhone 18e are expected to debut.
Fixed Focus Digital also claims Apple has shipped prototype units of the foldable iPhone to global carriers for testing.
Here’s a round-up of rumors about the foldable iPhone:
° It will use a dual-layer, ultra-thin glass structure to reduce display crease visibility.
° Apple will offer the iPhone Fold/Ultra in three different storage capacities.
° The foldable smartphone will purportedly be offered in 236GB, 512GB, and 1TB options for US$2,320, $2,610, and $2,900, respectively.
° It will feature an interior foldable display roughly the size of an iPad mini. There also will be an external screen that’s about the size of the display on a small iPhone.
° Apple is developing new iOS app layouts and revamping its core iPhone programs to add sidebars along the left edge of the screen, similar to many of its iPad apps.
° The iPhone Fold/Ultra will have: a 7.8-inch inner display; a crease depth controlled to under 0.15 mm; and a crease angle under 2.5 degrees.
° It may be the industry’s most repairable foldable phone.
