If you were hoping for the rumored low cost Mac laptop to arrive this year, seems you’ll be disappointed.

Apple is developing a more affordable Mac notebook that’s set to come out in the first half of 2026, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman (a subscription is required to read the article).

The laptop will cost “well under $1,000” and it will compete with affordable Windows machines and Chromebooks. Gurman says it will be Apple’s first “low cost” laptop. Apple’s lowest priced Mac notebook right now is the MacBook Air, which starts at $999.

This isn’t the first rumor about a low cost Mac laptop. A June 30 X post by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said Apple plans to release a MacBook powered by an A18 Pro processor. Kuo claimed such a laptop will enter mass production ini the fourth quarter of 2025 or early 2026. He said the Mac laptop will sport a 13-inch display with potential casing colors include silver, blue, pink, and yellow.

“Apple aims to return total MacBook shipments to the COVID-19 peak of around 25 million units in 2026 (vs. an estimated 20 million units in 2025),” Kuo said. “The more-affordable MacBook is projected to account for 5–7 million units for 2026.”
