Here’s why folks upgrade to new iPhones

With yesterday’s Apple announcement of the new iPhone 17 family, the speculation about models, pricing, and new features is over. The next question is, how will they sell?

The gang at Consumer Intelligence Research Partners took this opportunity, then, to return to their analysis of the reasons iPhone buyers buy their new iPhone. In CIRP’s quarterly survey of consumers who just bought a new iPhone, they asked them to explain why they bought that new iPhone.

The responses are much more focused on the old phone than the new one. The purchase decision seems more about replacement than upgrade, according to CIRP.

Among the reasons cited, almost half of buyers say their old phone needed replacing for one reason or another. A battery failed to hold a charge, a display was cracked, or the processor was too slow. It was time.
