Rumor claims Apple may have abandoned plans for an ‘iPhone Flip’

As I noted, it’s been reported that the “iPhone Fold” may be delayed until 2027. A new rumor from Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station — as noted by MacRumors — claims it won’t be dubbed the “iPhone Fold” as expected, but will be called the “iPhone Ultra.” Apple also has two “Ultra” products: the Apple Watch Ultra and CarPlay Ultra. And Apple is planning to launch more new “Ultra”-class devices this year, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman said in a “Power On” newsletter. He says that they’ll include: ° A MacBook Ultra, a MacBook Pro with an OLED, touchscreen display. ° AirPods Ultra: Gurman says the upcoming, and pricier, version of the current AirPods Pro will feature computer-vision cameras to feed Visual Intelligence data to Siri. In his post, he also said that the foldable iPhone might be dubbed the “iPhone Ultra.” I hope you’ll help support Apple World Today by becoming a patron. I’m dubious, but a new rumor claims Apple has ditched plans for the “iPhone Flip.” In a new post the Weibo leaker known as “Instant Digital” — as noted by MacRumors — says that the tech giant has at least rejected its initial flip design.

From the translated post: Apple abandoned its Flip phone design because most internally felt it was “unnecessary.” It didn’t create any new, essential usage scenarios; its biggest selling point was simply that it could be folded up and fit into a skinny jeans pocket, completely missing the point of Apple’s current hardware development focus.

The internal space of the small foldable phone was awkwardly divided in two by the hinge, making every inch precious. Battery capacity was limited, and significant compromises were made on camera performance… If the goal was simply to make the phone smaller, Apple would rather streamline its current [models].

Last month Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said Apple was considering an “iPhone Flip,” a foldable smartphone with a ”square, clamshell-style” design. He said the iPhone Flip would apparently be designed to compete with devices such as Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 7 and the modern-day Motorola Razr. The “iPhone Flip” would purportedly be released after the rumored “iPhone Fold,” Apple’s first foldable iPhone. The iPhone Fold is likely to arrive later this year and will have a price tag of around US$2,400.
