Forty-nine percent of Americans feel addicted to their smartphones

Forty-nine percent of Americans feel addicted to their smartphones.

Americans are spending more time than ever glued to their phones, according to new research from Harmony Healthcare IT. The second annual nationwide survey reveals a growing dependence on phones among Americans, with nearly half (49%) now reporting they feel addicted to their devices – up from 45% last year.

The study also found Americans now spend an average of 5 hours and 16 minutes daily on their phones – a 14% increase from last year. Here are some highlights from the Harmony Healthcare study:

  • Gen Z averages 6 hours and 27 minutes of daily screen time, while even Baby Boomers exceed 4 hours
  • 53% want to cut down on phone use in 2025
  • 79% identify social media as the most addictive type of phone app

While 1-in-4 of those who say they’re addicted see no issue with their dependency, the health impacts are becoming clearer: 69% reported experiencing phone-related health issues in the past year, from eye strain to neck pain. The social toll is equally concerning – 56% say friends and family are less present in social settings due to their phones, according to the folks at Harmony Healthcare.
