Apple is preparing a series of foldable products including a 19-inch Mac laptop and a foldable iPhone, according to The Wall Street Journal.
The article claims the laptop will essentially be the largest-ever MacBook with a foldable 19-inch screen, while the other is a foldable iPhone that would unfold to have an inwards-facing display that’s larger than the one on the 6.9-inch iPhone 16 Pro Max. The WSJ claims the iPhone will arrive in 2026 or 2027 with the Mac laptop coming later than that.
There have been constant rumors about a foldable iPhone going back years. And rumors of a “MacBook Fold” go back at least two years. In February 2022 analyst Ross Young said Apple is considering a 20-inch foldable MacBook. He adds that it and a foldable iPhone won’t arrive until 2025 — if not later.
Young says a foldable laptop could form a new product category. If it arrives, it could be a dual-use product: able to work as a notebook with a full-size on-screen keyboard when folded and as a monitor when unfolded and used with an external keyboard. The foldable could also allow for 4K resolutions or higher at the size Apple is investigating, Young added.
As wild as the idea sounds, Apple has filed for multiple patents that hint at foldable Macs, iPhones, and iPads. Included among them are patent filing 10,579,105 and patent filing number 20190163233.
The WJS also reiterates rumors that Apple plans an “iPhone Air.” The tech giant purportedly plans to introduce a smartphone that will be thinner than the approximately 8-millimeter profile of current models, per the WSJ. The model is intended to be cheaper than Pro models, with a simplified camera system to reduce costs, the article says.
