How to Use The Apple Intelligence Mail features in macOS Sequoia

On October 28, Apple announced the first set of Apple Intelligence features for the Mac, iPhone, and iPad via free software updates with macOS Sequoia 15.1, iOS 18.1, and iPadOS 18.1. One of the features is an improved Mail app.

Apple Intelligence is, per Apple, “the personal intelligence system that harnesses the power of Apple silicon to understand and create language and images, take action across apps, and draw from personal context to simplify and accelerate everyday tasks while taking an extraordinary step forward for privacy in AI.”

Priority Messages, a new section at the top of the inbox in Mail, shows the most urgent emails. And across your inbox, you can see summaries without needing to open a message. For long email threads, you can tap or click Summarize to view pertinent details. What’s more,  Smart Reply provides suggestions for a quick response and will identify questions in an email to ensure everything is answered.

To view Priority Messages in your inbox:

° Launch the Mail app.

° Click an inbox.

° Choose View in the menu bar.

° Click Show Priority. Time-sensitive emails appear at the top of your inbox.

To use Smart Reply

° Launch the Mail app.

° Click an email, then click the reverse arrow icon.

° Click the Message field, then choose a suggested reply. Apple Intelligence drafts a reply in the email. However, you can copy it, revise it, and repast it if it’s not to your satisfaction.

° Send the message when you’re done

To summarize yor email:

° Launch the Mail app. A short summary automatically appears under each email in your inbox.

° You can also click an email, then click Summarize. A summary appears above the email. If the email is part of a thread, the contents of the thread are summarized.

To turn email summary previews on or off:

° Launch the Mail app.

° Choose Mail > Settings, then click Viewing.

° Select or deselect Summarize Message Previews.
