In the past I’ve been disappointed that Macs are still shipping with 1080p FaceTime cameras instead of 4K.
However, I’ve since changed my mind. According to a post at the Benq website, unless you are a content creator with specific requirements, a 4K webcam might be a good investment. For general use, a 1080p webcam may be a better choice.
And this from a blog at the Kensington website: The average remote or hybrid worker doesn’t need the capabilities of a 4K webcam. Furthermore, most work-from-home employees do not have the bandwidth a 4K webcam needs. Even if you could afford the bandwidth necessary to run a 4K webcam, chances are the person (or people) on the other end of the connection would not have the capacity to handle the stream. It’s a waste of time, money, and resources.
What’s more, a 4K webcam usually costs more than a 1080p webcam, so adding ‘em to Macs would likely only increase the price. Will I complain if upcoming Macs get a 4K webcam? No. But I also won’t complain if they don’t.
