Strategy Analytics: Apple’s iPhone global shipments grow 44% year-over-year

According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, global smartphone shipments were 340 million units in quarter one of 2021, up 24% year-over-year representing the highest growth since 2015. And it was a good quarter for the iPhone.

Apple shipped 57 million units smartphones worldwide, capturing second place with a 17% volume market share — behind Samsung, which has 23% market share. The strong momentum behind the 5G iPhone 12 series continued across multiple markets, according to Strategy Analytics. And Apple’s smartphone shipments grew 44% year-over-year.

Neil Mawston, executive director at the research group, noted that Samsung remains the largest vendor shipping 77 million smartphones globally in the first quarter, growing 32% year-over-year from 58 million units in the first quarter of 2020. Samsung’s newly launched more affordable A series 4G and 5G phones, and the earlier launched Galaxy S21 series combined drove solid performance in the quarter, he added.
