HomePod mini has a ‘secret’ sensor that can measure temperature and humidity

Apple’s HomePod mini has a secret feature that hasn’t been activated, according to Bloomberg. The feature? A sensor that measures temperature and humidity.

“The company has internally discussed using the sensor to determine a room’s temperature and humidity so internet-connected thermostats can adjust different parts of a home based on current conditions, according to people familiar with the situation,” the report says. “The hardware could also let the ‌HomePod mini‌ automatically trigger other actions, say turning a fan on or off, depending on the temperature.”

Apparently, a software update could take advantage of the sensor to work with Apple’s HomeKit to enable more smart home features. HomeKit is a framework that allows control of compatible home automation devices through iOS and Siri. It works with the Home app, allowing you to control all your HomeKit accessories.
