Rumor: upcoming 12.9-inch iPad Pro will be slightly thicker due to its mini-LED display

Apple will launch the next generation of the 12.9-inch iPad Pro in March, reports Mac Otakara (as noted by 9totMac). The tablet will keep the current design but will be a bit thicker due to its incorporation of a mini-LED display, the article adds.

The Sellers Research Group (that’s me) thinks the report is correct and that the iPad Pro will be the first of several Apple products to sport such displays.

Mini-LEDs sport a local dimming function with a contrast effect similar to that of OLED displays. However, on some product lines, costs for mini-LED backlit displays may even be lower than their OLED counterparts, according to LEDinside. Mini-LED products are as thin as those using OLED technology so they consume less power than traditional LED screens, and they cost 70-80% less to produce than OLED displays, although their performance is similar.
