Apple Daily Report: Apple has 47% of the premium smartphone market (and more news)

Since Steve and I can’t cover everything, at the end of each week day, we’ll offer this wrap-up of news items you should check out. 

Apple is the driving force in the premium smartphone market, with a new Counterpoint Research report — as noted by AppleInsider —suggesting the growth in the quarter was driven by new iPhones, along with new flagship launches in China by local vendors. Counterpoint says Apple captured a 47% share of the premium segment in the period, followed by Samsung with 22%, Huawei with 12%, Vivo at 5%, Oppo with 5%, and Xiaomi at 3%. 

Austria plans to tax tech giants such as Google, Apple, Facebook, and Amazon, following France’s new levy on the so-called GAFA companies, according to AFP/Reuters. The EU has been trying to implement a bloc-wide policy on the matter.

iPhone assembler Wistron has increased the authorized capital of its subsidiary in India, Wistron InfoComm Manufacturing (India), to INR30 billion (about $430.62 million) to meet its future development in the country, according to a company filing with the Taiwan Stock Exchange, as noted by DigiTimes.

According to AppleInsider, future USB-C devices will confirm the authenticity of connected peripherals, which could lead to future iPhones, iPads, and Macs only accepting fully-compliant chargers and rejecting hazardous devices.

Former Apple software engineer Bob Burrough has posted a video of an environmentally-lit user iOS interface he’s developing. By using the iPhone’s front-facing camera, the iPhone’s UI shades objects based on the lighting in a room. Cult of Mac says “it may not sound that exciting, but once you see it in action you’ll be wowed.”
